According to the Bible, tithing is a practice rooted in faith and obedience. It is a way for individuals to honor God’s provision and trust in His promises. The word “tithe” means a tenth, and the practice involves giving a tenth of one’s income or resources as an offering. The word tithe or giving a tenth is mentioned a number of times in the Old Testament. Here are a couple of the scriptures.
Leviticus 27:30
“‘A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD.
Malachi 3:10
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.
In the New Testament Paul says in 2 Corinthians 9:6,7 Remember this:
Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. So, for some this may mean more than a tenth, for others it may mean less than a tenth. He emphasizes being a cheerful giver because God loves a joyful heart in giving. Whatever type of giver you are, we believe as long as it’s done with a cheerful heart, a heart of reverence to God, and a heart of stewardship with honor to God, then God is pleased. Your giving supports the work of the church, helps those in need, and spreads God’s message.
